REGINA v OLIG [2000] NSWSC 1242
The offender intentionally lit petrol in the deceased's home after breaking in, causing her death. Although he was to be sentenced on the basis that he did not intend to kill or cause serious injury and did not advert to the likelihood of death, his conduct was seriously unlawful and extremely dangerous, occurred in a domestic violence context, involved invasion of the victim's home, and required strong general deterrence. His lack of genuine remorse and the limited mitigating effect of his personal circumstances justified a sentence of twelve years' imprisonment with a non-parole period of eight years.
