R v Hassan [2014] NSWSC 280
Mr Hassan's manslaughter was a very serious example of the offence: against a background of marital disharmony, he lost self-control after low-level verbal provocation and brutally stabbed his much younger and smaller wife at least 14 times while she was vulnerable and defending herself. His prior good character, lack of planning, reasonable rehabilitation prospects, minimal likelihood of re-offending and early offer to plead guilty mitigated the sentence, but he showed no remorse and special circumstances were not established. A total term of 16 years was reduced by 25 per cent to 12 years, with the statutory non-parole period of 9 years.
