Each of the three murders was in the very worst category of murder. The offender intentionally shot each victim at close range with a shotgun; Rebecca Webb was killed because of jealousy in an intimate domestic relationship, Stephen Cumberland's body was mutilated by the burning of the caravan, Jacob Cumberland was killed because he was present, and the murders invaded a home environment. The offender's limited favourable subjective factors did not mitigate the sentence. The Court was satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that his culpability was so extreme that the community's interest in deterrence, retribution and punishment could only be served by life sentences on each count.
