Although the circumstantial evidence proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused strangled Megan Rose Gifford intending to kill her, the unanimous psychiatric evidence established that at the time she was suffering from schizophrenia or paranoid schizophrenia, a disease of the mind, which deprived her of the ability to reason about and appreciate the wrongness of her act. She was therefore not guilty of murder by reason of mental illness and had to be detained until released by due process of law.
