BLC [2016] NSWCATGD 3
Mr BLC was found to have a permanent cognitive impairment (Wernicke Korsakoff's syndrome) affecting decision-making and insight, justifying appointment of a guardian and financial manager. His inability to appreciate his condition and manage his finances, combined with vulnerability to harm and exploitation, justified a guardianship order with coercive accommodation powers and a financial management order. Ms QZC and Ms KPC were found suitable as private guardians and Ms QZC as financial manager, in preference to statutory authorities, as this arrangement best met Mr BLC's interests.
