McMahon, Inquest into the Death of [2021] NICoroner 4 (08 March 2021)

Gerard McMahon died on 8 September 2016 following a cardiac arrest during physical restraint by police officers, in the context of acute behavioural disturbance due to cocaine toxicity. The restraint, while not prolonged, was more than a minimal factor contributing to death, in conjunction with ABD, cocaine toxicity, obesity, and other medical factors. The use of force by police was found to be reasonable in the circumstances, but the combination of restraint and Mr McMahon's condition precipitated the fatal cardiac arrest.
