Crawford, Inquest Touching the Death of [2024] NICoroner 32 (16 December 2024)
Patrick Crawford died from a bullet wound to the chest while walking within the grounds of the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, on 10 August 1975. The inquest found, on the balance of probabilities, that Patrick was an innocent civilian not involved in paramilitary activity. The evidence was insufficient to identify the shooter or attribute responsibility to any individual or group. The original police investigation was perfunctory and failed to secure or retain key evidence. Article 2 ECHR procedural obligations do not apply due to the date of death. The inquest dispelled rumours of paramilitary involvement and found no reliable confession evidence relevant to Patrick's death.
