The Tribunal found that the parties had agreed to an inflation-adjusted compensation of UGX 311,532,203.56 for land compulsorily acquired by the Respondent in 2011, but payment was delayed until 2018. The Tribunal held that, in addition to inflation adjustment, the Claimants were entitled to interest as compensation for deprivation of use of their money, applying Section 26(2) of the Civil Procedure Act. The Tribunal determined that a reasonable interest rate, based on average commercial lending rates in Uganda from 2011 to 2018, was 20% per annum. Accordingly, interest at 20% per annum was awarded on UGX 211,000,000 from April 2011 to the date of judgment, and on UGX 311,532,203.56 from...
