The High Court found that the appellants failed to discharge the burden of proof required in civil cases to establish that they were the lawful owners of the suit land. Although the appellants produced a certificate of land ownership issued by Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom in the name of their predecessor, they failed to demonstrate that the certificate referred to the disputed land. At the locus in quo, the physical evidence, including the trench boundary and the respondents' developments, corroborated the respondents' long-standing occupation and ownership.
