Each member of a group who jointly converts another's property is liable for the full value of the property and any special damages directly arising from the deprivation, regardless of whether a particular member was present at the time of subsequent damage. The appellant's liability was incurred at the moment the car was unlawfully taken, and his later absence from the car did not mitigate or extinguish that liability. The damages recoverable are limited to the value of the car at the time of conversion, with no basis for general damages or special damages not directly arising from the tortious act.
