Ratio Decidendi

The court found that while the prosecution proved the death of the deceased, the unlawfulness of the killing, and malice aforethought, it failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the accused participated in the offence. The evidence against the accused was largely circumstantial and not sufficiently corroborated, particularly regarding the dying declarations. The prosecution did not adequately disprove the alibi defences raised by the accused. The court held that the inculpatory facts were not incompatible with the innocence of the accused nor incapable of explanation upon any other reasonable hypothesis than that of guilt. Consequently, the accused were acquitted.
