The appellate court is justified in reassessing damages where fresh evidence is introduced on appeal. The cost of future care must be supported by evidence; in its absence, only future medical expenses are allowed. Damages for pain, suffering, and loss of amenities must reflect the severity and permanence of the injuries, including the impact on the plaintiff's and spouse's lives. Loss of future earnings is to be calculated using a multiplicand reflecting likely future earnings less tax, and a multiplier appropriate to the plaintiff's age and circumstances.
