Article 176: In order to protect national welfare, safeguard the Islamic Republic, and territorial integrity and national sovereignty, the Supreme Council of National Security is established under the leadership of the President of the Republic. Its duties are as follows: 1. determining the defense and security policies of the country within the boundaries defined by the leadership; 2. coordinating political, social, informational, cultural, and economical activities in relation to general defense and security concerns; 3. benefiting from the country’s material and spiritual resources in confronting domestic and foreign threats. Members of the council consist of the following: . the heads of the three powers; . the commander-in-chief of the armed forces; 48
