Primary Provincial Industries Recognition Statutes Amendment Act, 2026
This Act adds rules about teaching Alberta students about primary provincial industries and declares February 13 as Fossil Fuel Recognition Day.
PRIMARY PROVINCIAL INDUSTRIES RECOGNITION STATUTES AMENDMENT ACT, 2026 Chapter 11 HIS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, enacts as follows: Amends SA 2012 cE-0.3 1 (1) The Education Act is amended by this section. (2) The following is added after section 18.1: Instruction relating to primary provincial industries 18.2 (1) In this section, “primary provincial industries” means the following sectors in Alberta: (a) fossil fuel resource development, including activities related to the exploration, extraction, processing and transportation of oil, natural gas and minerals; (b) forestry, including forest management planning, timber harvesting and reforestation; (c) agriculture, including crop and livestock production, and soil and land stewardship; (d) construction, including residential, commercial, industrial and public infrastructure building and maintenance projects. (2) Subject to subsection (3), the Minister must make an order under section 18(2)(b) to adopt or approve goals and standards applicable to the provision of education in Alberta, in an age-appropriate manner, with respect to the following: (a) the role of primary provincial industries in advancing the economic prosperity of Alberta, including the economic contributions made by primary provincial industries and the public revenues generated from primary provincial industries; (b) the potential career opportunities in primary provincial industries, including information about the skills necessary for employment in those careers; (c) Fossil Fuel Recognition Day, including its observance and purpose. (3) Prior to making an order, the Minister must consult with representatives of industry associations that represent one or more sectors of primary provincial industries, as the Minister considers appropriate. Amends SA 2022 cS-16.3 2 (1) The Special Days Act is amended by this section. (2) Section 3(1) is amended by striking out “under any other enactment” wherever it occurs and substituting “under this Act or any other enactment”. (3) The following is added after section 4: Fossil Fuel Recognition Day 4.1 February 13 in each year is declared to be Fossil Fuel Recognition Day to (a) recognize the beginning of the modern era of Alberta’s fossil fuel industry, and (b) increase the public’s awareness of the important contributions of fossil fuel resource development to Alberta’s economy. Coming into force 3 This Act comes into force on January 1, 2027.
