This regulation lists certain amphibians, reptiles, fur-bearing animals, and protected species as wild animals, and it defines what counts as one of those animals for the Wildlife Act.
Designation of Wild Animals Regulation, M.R. 3/96 The Wildlife Act , C.C.S.M. c. W130 Regulation 3/96 Registered January 15, 1996 bilingual version (HTML) Interpretation 1 For the purposes of The Wildlife Act , a species or type of animal listed in Schedule A to that Act or designated in this regulation as big game, game bird, fur bearing animal, small game, amphibian, reptile or a protected species includes (a) every animal of the species or type, whether living or dead and regardless of the stage of life or development; (b) an animal one of whose parents is an animal of the species or type; (c) an egg, sperm or embryo of an animal of the species or type; and (d) a body part that is or was a part of an animal of the species or type. Amphibians and reptiles 2 The following species are designated as amphibians and reptiles and are declared to be wild animals: (a) Cope's (Diploid) Gray Treefrog (Hyla chrysoscelis) ; (b) Gray (Tetraploid) Treefrog (Hyla versicolor) ; (c) Spring Peeper (Pseudacris crucifer) ; (d) Striped Chorus Frog (Pseudacris triseriata) ; (e) Green Frog (Rana clamitans) ; (f) Mink Frog (Rana septentrionalis) ; (g) Wood Frog (Rana sylvatica) ; (h) Mudpuppy (Necturus maculosus) ; (i) Blue-spotted Salamander (Ambystoma laterale) ; (j) Redbelly Snake (Storeria occipitomaculata) ; (k) Smooth Green Snake (Opheodrys vernalis) ; (l) American Toad (Bufo americanus) ; (m) Canadian Toad (Bufo hemiophrys) ; (n) Great Plains Toad (Bufo cognatus) . Fur bearing animals 2.1 Least weasel (Mustela nivalis) is designated as a fur bearing animal and declared to be a wild animal. M.R. 77/2025 Protected species 3 The following species are designated as protected species and are declared to be wild animals: (a) Big Brown Bat (Eptesicus fuscus) ; (b) Eastern Red Bat (Lasiurus borealis) ; (c) Hoary Bat (Lasiurus cinereus) ; (d) Keen's Myotis (Myotis keenii ); (e) Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus) ; (f) Silver-haired Bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans) ; (g) Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos) ; (h) Muskox (Ovibos moschatus) ; (i) Swift Fox (Vulpes velox) .
