Hunting Dogs Regulation
This regulation limits dog training and field trial activities involving live game birds and raccoons to licensed or otherwise authorized situations.
Hunting Dogs Regulation, M.R. 79/95 The Wildlife Act , C.C.S.M. c. W130 Regulation 79/95 Registered June 26, 1995 bilingual version (HTML) Definitions 1 In this regulation, "dog training club" means a corporation without share capital that is incorporated in Manitoba for the non-commercial training of dogs for hunting and that includes not less than 10 members who are Manitoba residents; (« club de dressage de chiens ») "field trial" means a sporting event, including a competition, for the purpose of demonstrating or testing the hunting abilities of dogs; (« épreuve pratique ») "game bird" means (a) rock dove of the family Columbidae, (b) chukar, and (c) grouse, partridge, pheasant, ptarmigan and quail of the family Phasianidae. (« gibier à plumes ») M.R. 9/2024 Dog trainer's licence required 2(1) Subject to subsection (2), no person shall (a) train a dog for hunting using a live wild game bird except under the authority of a dog trainer's licence; or (b) train a dog for hunting using a live domestically raised game bird except under the authority of a dog trainer's licence or a dog training club licence. 2(2) Subsection (1) does not apply to (a) a Manitoba resident who, for his or her personal use, trains no more than three dogs for hunting using a live rock dove or domestically raised game bird; or (b) a person hunting game birds during an open game bird season under the authority of a game bird hunting licence. 2(3) No person shall pursue a raccoon with a dog except under the authority of a dog trainer's (raccoon) licence. M.R. 9/2024 Licence required before entering province 3(1) Subject to subsection (2), a person who is not a Manitoba resident must not bring a dog into Manitoba for the purpose of training the dog for hunting using live game birds without having first obtained a dog trainer's licence. 3(2) Subsection (1) does not apply to a member or guest of a dog training club or to a person who enters Manitoba to participate in a field trial held under the authority of a dog training club licence or field trial permit. M.R. 9/2024 Field trial permit required 4 No person shall hold a field trial using live game birds except under the authority of a dog training club licence or field trial permit. Permission to train on private land 5 No person shall, under the authority of a dog trainer's licence, train a dog for hunting on private land without the written permission of the owner or the owner's designate. Harassment of other wildlife 6 No person shall, while training a dog for hunting, allow the dog to hunt any wildlife other than as authorized by a licence issued under this regulation. Prohibition on shooting game birds 7(1) Except when permitted under a dog trainer's licence, dog training club licence or field trial permit, no person may release, shoot or kill a rock dove or domestically raised game bird while training a dog for hunting or participating in a field trial. 7(2) Despite subsection (1), a Manitoba resident involved in the non-commercial training of dogs may release, shoot or kill a rock dove or domestically raised game bird while training a dog for hunting if (a) the training takes place on private land with the permission of the owner or lawful occupant of the land; and (b) where domestically raised game birds are involved, the person has in his or her possession a written receipt confirming that the birds were obtained from a game bird farm licensee or a game bird shooting preserve licensee. M.R. 152/2003 Number of dogs may be restricted 8 The minister may restrict the number of dogs a person possesses or imports into Manitoba for the purpose of training for hunting under a dog trainer's licence. Number of helpers may be restricted 9 The minister may restrict the number of persons listed as helpers under a dog trainer's licence. Pursuing raccoons with dogs 10(1) No person pursuing a raccoon under the authority of a dog trainer's (raccoon) licence shall kill a raccoon or allow a dog under his or her control to kill a raccoon. 10(2) A person pursuing a raccoon under the authority of a dog trainer's (raccoon) licence may use a portable light for the purpose of following his or her dog. Firearm use restricted 11(1) No person shall, while training a dog for hunting under the authority of a dog trainer's licence, dog trainer's (raccoon) licence or dog training club licence or while participating in a field trial, carry or use a firearm unless authorized to do so by the licence or field trial permit. 11(2) Subsection (1) does not apply to a person who carries or uses a firearm (a) that is capable of firing blanks only; or (b) during an open game bird season, that is permitted under the authority of a game bird hunting licence. Period of validity 12(1) A dog trainer's licence is valid from August 1 to September 15. 12(2) A dog trainer's (raccoon) licence is valid from April 1 to October 31. Restricted to one licence 13 No person shall obtain or attempt to obtain more than one dog trainer's licence during the same calendar year. Repeal 14 The Training and Use of Dogs for Hunting Wildlife Regulation , Manitoba Regulation 37/88 R, is repealed.
