"A" , when it refers to a class of highway, means a class A highway. (« A ») "A1" , when it refers to a class of highway, means a class A1 highway. (« A1 ») "Act" means The Highway Traffic Act . («  Code  ») "A-dolly" means a trailer converter dolly that is towed from a single hitch located on the centre line of the towing vehicle. (« diabolo de type A ») "aerodynamic device" means auxiliary equipment that is designed and used to improve the aerodynamic performance of a vehicle and is mounted at the rear of a truck, trailer or semi-trailer. (« dispositif aérodynamique ») "articulation point" means (a) the vertical axis of the kingpin in a fifth wheel coupler and kingpin assembly; (b) the vertical axis through the centre of a lunette eye in a pintle hook and lunette eye assembly; or (c) the vertical axis through the centre of rotation of a turntable or other similar device; that allows the vehicles in a combination of vehicles to rotate in the horizontal plane relative to one another. (« point d'articulation ») "A-train" means a combination of vehicles composed of a truck tractor and a semi-trailer towing either (a) a semi-trailer attached to the lead semi-trailer using an A-dolly; or (b) a full trailer attached to the lead semi-trailer in the same manner as if an A-dolly were being used. (« train de type A ») "auxiliary equipment" means equipment that (a) is permanently mounted at the front, at the rear or on the side of a vehicle; and (b) is not designed, intended or used to increase the vehicle's load-carrying capacity. (« équipement auxiliaire ») "axle group" has the same meaning as in subsection 1(2). (« groupe d'essieux ») "axle spread" means the longitudinal distance between the extreme axle centres of the axle unit. (« écartement des essieux ») "axle unit" means (a) a single axle; (b) a tandem axle; or (c) a tridem axle; regardless of whether it is a drive axle or is an unpowered axle (including a steering axle). (« bloc essieu ») "B" , when it refers to a class of highway, means a class B highway. (« B ») "B1" , when it refers to a class of highway, means a class B1 highway. (« B1 ») "box length" in respect of (a) a single semi-trailer, means the distance from the front of the semi-trailer to its rear, including the load but not including auxiliary equipment; (b) an A-train, B-train or C-train, means the distance from the front of the lead semi-trailer to the rear of the rearmost vehicle in the A-train, B-train or C-train, including the load but not including auxiliary equipment mounted on the lead semi-trailer; or (c) a truck and trailer combination, means the distance from the front of the load-carrying area on the truck to the rear of the rearmost vehicle in the truck and trailer combination, including the load but not including auxiliary equipment. (« longueur de la caisse ») "B-train" means a combination of vehicles composed of a truck tractor and a semi-trailer, followed by another semi-trailer attached to a fifth wheel coupler mounted on the rear of the first semi-trailer. (« train de type B ») "C" , when it refers to a class of highway, means a class C highway. (« C ») "C-dolly" means a trailer converter dolly equipped with (a) a self-steering axle; and (b) a rigid double pintle hitch assembly located on a horizontal transverse plane. (« diabolo de type C ») "C-train" means a combination of vehicles composed of a truck tractor and a semi-trailer, followed by another semi-trailer attached to the first semi-trailer by the means of a C-dolly. (« train de type C ») "daytime" means the period between one-half hour after sunrise and one-half hour before sunset. (« jour ») "drawbar" means a structural part of a full trailer, pony trailer or trailer converter dolly that includes a device for the purpose of coupling with a hitching device or fifth wheel coupler. (« timon ») "drawbar length" in respect of (a) a truck in combination with a pony trailer, means the longitudinal distance measured from the geometric centre of the hitching device of the towing vehicle to the front of the load-carrying portion of the pony trailer; (b) a truck in combination with a full trailer, means the longitudinal distance measured from the geometric centre of the hitching device of the towing vehicle to the geometric centre of the coupling device on the full trailer; or (c) an A-train or C-train, means the longitudinal distance measured from the geometric centre of the hitching device on the lead semi-trailer to the geometric centre of the fifth wheel coupler of a trailer converter dolly. (« longueur du timon ») "drive axle" means an axle unit that is or may be connected to the power source of a motor vehicle and transmits tractive power to the wheels. (« essieu moteur ») "effective overhang" means the greater of the following: (a) the distance from the turn centre to the rearmost point of the truck, trailer, semi-trailer or bus; (b) if there is a load on the truck, trailer or semi-trailer, the distance from the turn centre to the rearmost point of the load. (« porte-à-faux effectif ») "end dump bulk trailer" means a semi trailer truck so constructed that the semi-trailer box may be elevated to provide for the dumping of a load through the rear of the trailer. (« remorque de vrac à basculeur en bout ») "fifth wheel coupler" means a coupling device securely attached to the chassis of a vehicle and which will accept a semi-trailer kingpin inserted through the device and will lock the kingpin in position to allow rotation in a horizontal plane through the coupling device. (« sellette d'attelage ») "fifth wheel recreational vehicle" means a vehicle without motive power that meets the following requirements: (a) the vehicle is designed to be towed by a truck to which it is attached by means of a fifth wheel coupler; (b) when attached to the truck, a substantial portion of the vehicle's weight rests on the truck; (c) 2/3 or more of the length of the vehicle is designed as temporary living quarters. (« véhicule récréatif équipé d'une sellette d'attelage ») "full trailer" means a vehicle without motive power that is designed to be towed by another vehicle and is so designed that the whole of its weight and load is carried on its own axles and includes a combination consisting of a semi-trailer and trailer converter dolly. (« remorque ») "gross axle weight" means the gross weight carried by an axle unit and transmitted to the road by the wheels of that axle. (« poids en charge sur un essieu ») "gross vehicle weight" means the total weight of a vehicle or combination of vehicles, including its load, transmitted to the road by its axles. (« poids en charge d'un véhicule ») "hitch offset" means the longitudinal distance from the turn centre to the articulation point of the hitching device or fifth wheel coupler used to tow the following vehicle. (« décalage du crochet d'attelage ») "interaxle spacing" means the longitudinal distance separating two axle units as determined from the centres of each of the axles that is the closest to the other axle unit. (« entraxe ») "kingpin setback" means the horizontal distance from the vertical axis through the centre of the kingpin to any point on the semi-trailer ahead of the kingpin including any load, but excluding any auxiliary equipment attached to the front of the semi-trailer that is not designed for the transportation of goods. (« décalage du pivot d'attelage ») "load-covering device" means a device or equipment designed or used to cover a vehicle's load. (« dispositif de protection ») "load securement device" means (a) a tie down, binder, lock chain, cable, belt, rope, winch, cinch, hook or covering; or (b) a door handle, door lock, door hinge or bunk cable guide; required or permitted by the Act and regulations. (« dispositif d'arrimage du chargement ») "nighttime" means the period beginning one-half hour before sunset and ending one-half hour after sunrise. (« nuit ») "overall height" means the vertical distance between the surface of the road and the highest point on a vehicle or combination of vehicles, including load. (« hauteur hors tout ») "overall length" means the longitudinal distance from the foremost point of a vehicle or combination of vehicles to the rearmost point of the vehicle or combination of vehicles, including load and auxiliary equipment. (« longueur hors tout ») "overall width" means the widest transverse dimension of a vehicle or combination of vehicles, including load and auxiliary equipment. (« largeur hors tout ») "overdimensional" , in respect of a vehicle, means that the height, width or length of the vehicle or a load carried by it exceed the maximum permitted under the regulations. (« surdimensionné ») "overweight" , in respect of a vehicle, means that the vehicle's total weight or the weight on any individual axle group, axle or tire exceeds the maximum permitted under the regulations. (« surchargé ») "pony trailer" means a vehicle without motive power that is equipped with a rigid drawbar and is designed to be towed by another vehicle and is so designed to carry all or substantially all of its gross vehicle weight on its axles. (« petite remorque ») "PR" means provincial road. (« R.P.S. ») "provincial road" means a highway that is a provincial road within the meaning of The Transportation Infrastructure Act . (« route provinciale secondaire ») "provincial trunk highway" means a highway that is a provincial trunk highway within the meaning of The Transportation Infrastructure Act . (« route provinciale à grande circulation ») "PTH" means provincial trunk highway. (« R.P.G.C. ») "RTAC route" means a highway designated as an RTAC route in Schedule A. (« parcours ARTC ») "self-steering axle" means an axle on which the wheels turn left and right on one or more essentially vertical axes but their turning is not controlled by means of the steering wheel in the operator's compartment. (« essieu autovireur ») "semi-trailer" means a vehicle without motive power, designed so that a substantial part of its weight and load rests on and is carried by the truck tractor, another semi-trailer or a trailer converter dolly to which it is attached by a fifth wheel coupler. (« semi-remorque ») "single axle" has the same meaning as in subsection 1(2). (« essieu simple ») "steering axle" means (a) the articulated axle or axles of a vehicle that are controlled by the driver and govern the direction travelled by the vehicle; or (b) an articulated axle on a trailer or semi-trailer where the direction of travel of the trailer is governed by the towing unit. (« essieu directeur ») "sunrise" and "sunset" are the times determined by the National Research Council of Canada. (« coucher du soleil » et « lever du soleil ») "tandem axle" means two or more equally spaced consecutive axles having, except in the case of a tandem steering axle, an axle spread of not less than 1.0 m and not more than 1.85 m that are designed to automatically distribute the load so that the gross axle weight on each single axle does not exceed the maximum prescribed for a single axle under this regulation. (« essieu tandem ») "tandem steering axle" means a tandem axle having an axle spread of not less than 1.0 m and not more than 2.2 m, on a truck or truck tractor, consisting of two axles both of which are articulated, are controlled by the driver and govern the direction travelled by the vehicle. (« essieu directeur tandem ») "track width" means the distance from the outside face of the outermost tire on one end of an axle to the outside face of the outermost tire on the axle's opposite end, measured at any point above the lowest point of the rim. (« voie ») "trailer converter dolly" means a vehicle without motive power that has (a) one or more axles; (b) the lower half of a fifth wheel coupler; and (c) a draw bar assembly; and is designed to be used to convert a semi-trailer to a full trailer. (« diabolo remorqué ») "tridem axle" means three equally spaced consecutive axles, having an axle spread of not less than 2.4 m nor more than 3.7 m and which are designed to automatically distribute the load so that the gross axle weight on each single axle does not exceed the maximum prescribed for a single axle under this regulation and so that the gross axle weight on any two adjacent single axles does not exceed the maximum prescribed for a tandem axle under this regulation. (« essieu tridem ») "tridem drive axle group" means a tridem axle group in which all three axles are connected to a power source that transmits tractive power to all wheels on those axles. (« groupe d'essieux moteurs tridem ») "truck" means a motor vehicle designed or adapted primarily for the transportation of cargo or property. (« camion ») "truck tractor" means a truck designed primarily for towing a semi-trailer connected by means of a fifth wheel coupler, and not constructed for carrying any load other than part of the weight of the trailer. (« véhicule tracteur ») "turn centre" means the geometric centre of (a) the axle group on a semi-trailer or pony trailer; or (b) the rear axle group on a full trailer, truck, truck tractor, bus or motor home. (« axe de virage ») "wheelbase" , in relation to (a) a full trailer, means the longitudinal distance from the centre of the trailer's turntable to the trailer's turn centre; (b) a pony trailer, means the longitudinal distance from the centre of the trailer's hitching device to the trailer's turn centre; (c) a semi-trailer, means the longitudinal distance from the centre of the trailer's kingpin to the trailer's turn centre; (d) a truck, truck tractor, bus or motor home, means the longitudinal distance from the centre of the vehicle's steering axle unit to the vehicle's turn centre. (« empattement ») "wide-base single tire" means a tire that (a) has a width of 445 mm or more; (b) meets the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Tire Safety Regulations , SOR/2013-198; and (c) is mounted on a non-steering axle having only a single tire at either end. (« pneu simple à bande large ») "width" in relation to a tire, means the width of the tire as measured or rated by the tire's manufacturer. (« largeur ») 1(2) For the purpose of subsection 1(1) of the Act, the following terms are given the following meanings: "axle group" means a tandem axle or tridem axle. (« groupe d'essieux ») "single axle" means one axle or two consecutive axles that have an axle spread of less than 1.0 m. (« essieu simple ») 1(3) RTAC is the acronym for Roads and Transportation Association of Canada. 1(4) In this regulation, a reference to a highway as an "Access Road" means that the highway is a provincial road (access road) within the meaning of the Declaration of Provincial Roads (Access Roads) Regulation , Manitoba Regulation 414/88 R. This subsection does not apply to the Sherridon community-access road. M.R. 32/2019 ; 104/2023 ; 115/2025 Application 2 This regulation does not apply to a person (a) who is operating a vehicle that is operated solely for the purpose of road construction, maintenance or snow removal when the vehicle is being operated on behalf of a traffic authority; and (b) who is operating a vehicle and who has a permit issued under the Act and regulations authorizing the operation of the vehicle on a highway. Orders, etc., under s. 68 or 86 of Act qualify application of regulation 3(1) The highway classifications set out in this regulation are subject to orders that may be made from time to time under subsection 68(3.2) or (3.3) of the Act, and the permissible vehicle weights and dimensions set out in this regulation are subject to orders that may be made from time to time under subsection 68(3.2) or (3.3) and regulations, orders, by-laws or resolutions that may be made from time to time under section 86 of the Act. 3(2) In accordance with subsections 68(3.2) and (3.3) of the Act, orders may be made under either of those subsections by the minister or by the minister's delegate. 3(3) In accordance with section 86 of the Act, (a) regulations or orders affecting highways for which the minister is the traffic authority may be made by the minister and orders affecting those highways may be made by the minister's delegate; and (b) by-laws or resolutions may be made by another traffic authority affecting highways under its authority. 3(4) Drivers and operators of vehicles to which this regulation applies are cautioned (a) that an order mentioned in subsection (2) may, in respect of a highway, lower the permissible vehicle weights and dimensions set out in this regulation or may reclassify a highway (resulting in a similar lowering); and (b) that a regulation, order, by-law or resolution mentioned in subsection (3) may, in respect of a highway, lower the permissible vehicle weights and dimensions set out in this regulation or otherwise restrict or prohibit the use of a highway. 3(5) Drivers and operators of vehicles to which this regulation applies are advised to regularly check the website of the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure for information on regulations and orders mentioned in subsections (2) and (3) that may be in effect from time to time and may qualify the application of this regulation. Similar information about by-laws and resolutions that have been made by another traffic authority under section 86 of the Act may be available on that traffic authority's website or by contacting it directly. M.R. 104/2023 PART 2 CLASSIFICATION AND DESIGNATION OF HIGHWAYS Classification of highways as RTAC routes 4 A class of highways known as RTAC routes is established. Designation of highways as RTAC routes 5(1) Except as may be provided by an order made under subsection 68(3.2) or (3.3) of the Act, the following portions of highways are designated as RTAC routes: (a) those listed in the second column of the table in subsection 1(1) of Schedule A; (b) those listed in subsection 1(2) of Schedule A. 5(2) The portions of highways described in the second column of the table in subsection 2(1) of Schedule A are designated as RTAC routes during the period that begins as specified in an order described in clause 2(2)⁠(a) of that Schedule and ends as specified in an order described in clause 2(2)⁠(b) of that Schedule. Classification of certain provincial roads and other highways as class A1 highways 6 Except as may be provided by an order made under subsection 68(3.2) or (3.3) of the Act, the following portions of provincial roads and other highways are classified as class A1 highways: (a) those listed in the second column of the table in subsection 1(1) of Schedule B; (b) those listed in subsection 1(2) of Schedule B. PART 3 PERMISSIBLE VEHICLE HEIGHT Maximum permissible vehicle height 7 A person must not drive or operate a vehicle on a highway if the vehicle's overall height is more than 4.15 m. PART 4 PERMISSIBLE VEHICLE AND AXLE WIDTH Application 8 This Part does not apply to agricultural equipment that is temporarily operated or drawn on a highway (a) for agricultural purposes, including repair; or (b) for, by or on behalf of a dealer for the purpose of moving it between a farm and the dealer's place of business during the daytime. M.R. 32/2019 Maximum permissible passenger vehicle width 9 A person must not drive or operate a passenger vehicle on a highway if the vehicle's overall width is more than 2.1 m. Maximum permissible non-passenger vehicle width 10(1) A person must not drive or operate on a highway a vehicle that is not a passenger vehicle if the vehicle's overall width is more than 2.6 m. 10(2) In determining a vehicle's overall width for the purpose of subsection (1), the following must not be taken into account: (a) loose hay, straw or fodder projecting beyond the vehicle's sides to a total outside width of not more than 3.7 m; (b) one or more mirrors for the purpose of complying with the Act that do not extend more than 30 cm on each side beyond the overall width permitted by subsection (1); (c) a splash guard, load-covering device, load securement device, ladder, clearance lamp, dangerous goods placard or piece of other auxiliary equipment that does not extend more than 10 cm on each side beyond the overall width permitted by subsection (1). Maximum permissible vehicle track width 11(1) Subject to subsection (3) and except as permitted by subsection (4) or (5), a person must not drive or operate a trailer on a highway if the track width of an axle of the trailer is (a) less than 2.5 m if the trailer is a semi-trailer or has a registered gross weight of 4,500 kg or more; or (b) more than 2.6 m. 11(2) To avoid doubt, subsection (1) applies to an axle whether it is equipped with conventional single tires, wide-base single tires or conventional dual tires. 11(3) In the case of a semi-trailer or full trailer that was manufactured before July 1, 1988, clause (1)⁠(a) does not apply to an axle on the trailer unless (a) the axle was replaced after that date; and (b) the track width of the axle is not equal to the track width of the trailer's original running gear. 11(4) As an exception to clause (1)⁠(a), a person may operate a trailer equipped with an axle that does not comply with that clause on a highway if (a) the trailer was manufactured before January 1, 2010, and the axle meets all of the following criteria: (i) the axle is equipped with wide-base single tires, (ii) the axle's track width is not less than 2.3 m and not more than 2.6 m; or (b) the trailer was manufactured on or after January 1, 2010, and the axle meets all of the following criteria: (i) the axle is equipped with wide-base single tires, (ii) the axle is not one to which subsection (5) applies, (iii) the axle's track width is not less than 2.45 m and not more than 2.6 m. 11(5) As a further exception to clause (1)⁠(a), a person may operate a trailer manufactured on or after January 1, 2010 that has been converted from an original dual-tire configuration to wide-base single tires and does not meet the track width requirement set out in clause (1)⁠(a) if (a) the axle conversion was performed by a person certified under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (Canada) to perform the conversion at the time of conversion; (b) the axle is equipped with wide-base single tires; (c) the axle's track width is not less than 2.45 m and not more than 2.6 m; and (d) the trailer displays a label, adjacent to its original compliance label under the Act mentioned in clause (a), that (i) identifies the person that performed the conversion, and (ii) states the axle's revised tire and wheel size specifications and revised gross axle weight rating and the trailer's revised gross vehicle weight rating. 11(6) A person must not drive or operate a vehicle on a highway if it is equipped with a tridem drive axle group and the track width of an axle in the axle group is less than 2.5 m or more than 2.6 m. M.R. 32/2019 PART 5 PERMISSIBLE VEHICLE LENGTH AND OTHER PERMISSIBLE LONGITUDINAL CHARACTERISTICS Application 12 This Part does not apply to a person driving or operating on a highway a tow truck towing another motor vehicle that is unable to run under its own power. Maximum permissible vehicle length 13(1) A person must not drive or operate on a highway (a) a single vehicle having an overall length longer than 12.5 m, other than a motor home that is permitted by clause (b), a bus that is permitted by clause (d) or (e) or a truck that is permitted by subsection (2); (b) a motor home having an overall length longer than 14 m; (c) a trailer having an overall length longer than 12.5 m; (d) a bus with an articulation point between the passenger carrying sections of the bus unless (i) the overall length of the bus is 20 m or less, (ii) the distance from the articulation point to the front or rear of the bus is 12.5 m or less, and (iii) movement of passengers between the articulated sections of the bus is possible at all times while the bus is being operated on a highway; (e) a bus without any articulation point if (i) its overall length is longer than 14 m, and (ii) its effective overhang is more than 4 m; (f) a vehicle (other than a truck tractor single semi-trailer combination) that (i) has an overall length longer than 21.5 m, and (ii) consists of a combination of two vehicles that has a single articulation point; (g) a truck tractor in combination with a single semi-trailer if their overall length is longer than 23 m; (h) a truck tractor equipped with a tridem drive axle group in combination with a single semi-trailer if their overall length is longer than 23.5 m; (i) a vehicle (other than an A-train, B-train or C-train) that (i) has an overall length longer than 23 m, and (ii) consists of a combination of vehicles that has more than one articulation point; (j) an A-train or C-train if its overall length is longer than 25 m; (k) a B-train if its overall length is longer than 27.5 m; (l) a driveaway unit having an overall length longer than 23 m; (m) a truck in combination with a pony trailer or full trailer if (i) their combined overall length is longer than 23 m, or (ii) the overall length of the pony trailer or full trailer is more than 12.5 m; or (n) a truck in combination with a fifth wheel recreational vehicle if (i) their combined overall length is longer than 21.5 m, or (ii) the overall length of the fifth wheel recreational vehicle is more than 14.65 m. 13(2) A person must not drive or operate on a highway (a) a truck that has an overall length of more than 12.5 m, unless the truck is a truck referred to in clause (b); or (b) a truck that is equipped with a tandem steer axle group and tridem drive axle group and has an overall length of more than 14 m. 13(3) The exclusions set out in section 14 apply in determining the overall length of a vehicle for the purpose of this section. M.R. 104/2023 Equipment excluded from length of vehicle 14 In determining the overall length of a vehicle for the purpose of section 13, (a) an aerodynamic device is not to be included in the vehicle's length as long as (i) no portion of the device that is higher than 1.9 m above the ground extends more than 1.52 m beyond the rear of the vehicle, (ii) no portion of the device that is 1.9 m above the ground or lower extends beyond a transverse plane (A) beginning at the rear bottom edge of the rear impact guard (if the vehicle is so equipped) or the lowest point of the rearmost part of the vehicle, and (B) extending rearwards and upwards from that edge or point and intersecting a point that is 1.74 m above the ground and 1.21 m behind the rear of the vehicle, (iii) the device is collapsible, and (iv) when fully collapsed, no portion of the device extends more than 0.305 m beyond the rear of the vehicle; and (b) an auxiliary device designed to reduce the impact of wildlife collisions that is mounted on front of a truck or truck tractor is not to be included in determining the vehicle's length as long as (i) no part of the device extends more than 30 cm beyond the front of the truck or truck tractor, and (ii) the vehicle is not a B-train. Requirements as to wheelbase and box length 15(1) A person must not drive or operate on a highway (a) a truck equipped with a tridem drive axle group and a single steering axle if the truck's wheelbase is shorter than 6.6 m; (b) a truck equipped with a tridem drive axle group with an axle spread of 2.4 m or more but less than 2.7 m and a tandem steering axle group if the truck's wheelbase is shorter than 7.7 m; (c) a truck equipped with a tridem drive axle group with an axle spread of 2.7 m or more but less than 3 m and a tandem steering axle group if the truck's wheelbase is shorter than 7.8 m; and (d) a truck equipped with a tridem drive axle group with an axle spread of 3 m or more but not more than 3.1 m and a tandem steering axle group if the truck's wheelbase is shorter than 7.9 m. 15(2) A person must not drive or operate a truck on a highway in combination with a pony trailer or full trailer if (a) the box length of the truck and pony trailer, or truck and full trailer, including their loads, is more than 20 m; or (b) the wheelbase of the pony trailer or full trailer is less than 6.25 m. 15(3) A person must not drive or operate on a highway (a) a truck tractor equipped with a single drive axle or a tandem drive axle group if the tractor's wheelbase is longer than (i) 6.2 m if the truck tractor is being operated in an A-train or a C-train configuration, (ii) 6.8 m if the truck tractor is being operated in a B-train configuration, or (iii) 7.2 m if the truck tractor is being operated in any other configuration; or (b) a truck tractor equipped with a tridem drive axle group if the tractor's wheelbase is shorter than 6.6 m or longer than 6.8 m. 15(4) A person must not drive or operate on a highway a truck tractor in combination with a single semi-trailer if (a) the box length of the semi-trailer is more than 16.2 m; (b) in the case of a truck tractor coupled to a semi-trailer equipped with a tandem or tridem axle, the wheelbase of the semi-trailer is less than 6.25 m or more than 12.5 m; or (c) in the case of a truck tractor equipped with a single drive axle or a tandem drive axle group, the tractor has a wheelbase range set out in the left column of the following table and the semi-trailer wheelbase is longer than the maximum set out opposite in the corresponding row in the right column: Tractor Wheelbase Maximum Semi-Trailer Wheelbase up to 6.2 m 12.50 m >6.2 m to 6.3 m 12.47 m >6.3 m to 6.4 m 12.40 m > 6.4 m to 6.5 m 12.33 m > 6.5 m to 6.6 m 12.27 m > 6.6 m to 6.7 m 12.20 m > 6.7 m to 6.8 m 12.13 m > 6.8 m to 6.9 m 12.07 m > 6.9 m to 7.0 m 12.00 m > 7.0 m to 7.1 m 11.93 m > 7.1 m to 7.2 m 11.87 m 15(5) A person must not drive or operate on a highway an A-train if (a) the box length is more than 20 m; or (b) the wheelbase of the lead semi-trailer or the following full trailer is less than 6.25 m. 15(6) A person must not drive or operate on a highway a B-train if (a) the box length is more than 20 m; (b) the wheelbase of either semi-trailer is less than 6.25 m or more than 12.5 m; (b.1) the truck tractor has a tridem drive axle group and the sum of the two semi-trailer wheelbases is more than 17 m; or (c) if the tractor wheelbase is of a length set out in the left column of the table below, the sum of the two semi-trailer wheelbases is more than the maximum set out in the corresponding right column of the table below: Tractor Wheelbase Maximum Sum of the Two Semi-Trailer Wheelbases up to 6.2 m 17.00 m >6.2 m to 6.3 m 16.53 m >6.3 m to 6.4 m 16.44 m > 6.4 m to 6.5 m 16.36 m > 6.5 m to 6.6 m 16.27 m > 6.6 m to 6.7 m 16.19 m > 6.7 m to 6.8 m 16.10 m 15(7) A person must not drive or operate on a highway a C-train if (a) the box length is more than 20 m; or (b) the wheelbase of the lead semi-trailer or the following full trailer is less than 6.25 m. M.R. 104/2023 Towing two trailers 16 A person must not drive or operate on a highway a motor vehicle drawing two trailers unless (a) the motor vehicle is equipped with a fifth wheel coupler towing a gooseneck type trailer, and the combined weight of the trailers does not exceed twice the registered gross vehicle weight of the motor vehicle; or (b) the motor vehicle is an A-train, B-train or C-train that complies with this Part. PART 6 SETBACKS, PROJECTIONS, OVERHANGS AND MISCELLANEOUS DIMENSIONAL REQUIREMENTS Projections from passenger vehicles 17 A person must not drive or operate on a highway a passenger vehicle carrying a load (a) extending beyond the line of the splash guards or fenders on the vehicle's left side; or (b) extending more than 150 mm beyond the line of the fenders or splash guards on the vehicle's right side. Kingpin setback 18 A person must not drive or operate a semi-trailer on a highway if part of the body or load of the semi-trailer extends to the front of the trailer's articulation point by more than 2 m. Front and rear projections 19(1) A person must not drive or operate a vehicle or combination of vehicles on a highway (a) if a part of the vehicle or combination, or its equipment or load, projects more than 1 m beyond the front wheels; or (b) when the vehicle or combination is equipped with a front bumper, if a part of the vehicle or combination, or its equipment or load, projects more than 1 m beyond the front bumper. 19(2) A person must not drive or operate on a highway a vehicle or combination of vehicles if a part of the vehicle or combination, or its equipment or load, projects more than 1 m beyond the rear of the vehicle or combination, unless (a) when the vehicle or combination is operated during the daytime, a red flag not less than 30 cm square, visible at a distance of 60 m, is displayed at the end of the projection; and (b) when the vehicle or combination is operated during the nighttime, (i) a red light that is clearly visible from a vehicle approaching from the rear is placed at the end of the projection, or (ii) a red reflector that will be illuminated by the headlights of a vehicle approaching from the rear is placed at the end of the projection. Effective overhang 20(1) A person must not drive or operate on a highway (a) a truck if the effective overhang exceeds 4 m; (b) a pony trailer if the effective overhang exceeds 4 m; or (c) a semi-trailer in combination with a truck tractor if the effective overhang on the semi-trailer exceeds 35% of the wheelbase of the semi-trailer. 20(2) An automatic tarp or the auxiliary equipment used to extend and retract it is not to be included in the determination of a vehicle's effective overhang. M.R. 104/2023 Drawbar length 21 A person must not drive or operate a C-train on a highway if the length of the drawbar exceeds 2.4 m. Hitch offset 22 A person must not drive or operate a combination of vehicles on a highway if the hitch offset exceeds 1.8 m. B-train fifth wheel 23 A person must not drive or operate a B-train on a highway if the fifth wheel on the lead trailer is located more than 0.3 m behind the centre of the lead semi-trailer's rear axle. PART 7 REQUIREMENTS ABOUT AXLES AND TIRES Axle groups 24(1) A person must not drive or operate on a highway a vehicle or combination of vehicles having attached to it two consecutive axle units which are in contact with the ground, unless one of the axles (a) rotates in the horizontal plane about a vertical axis; or (b) articulates in the manner of a steering axle, relative to the second axle; and such rotation or articulation is sufficient to prevent lateral movement between the road surface and the tires on the rims affixed to that axle. 24(2) A person must not drive or operate on a highway (a) a truck equipped with a tandem steering axle and single drive axle; (b) a truck tractor equipped with a tandem steering axle; (c) a truck tractor in combination with one or more semi-trailers on which more than one axle unit on a semi-trailer is in contact with the ground, unless (i) the semi-trailer is equipped with two single axle units with an interaxle spacing of not less than 1.86 m and not more than 3.7 m, and (ii) the sum of the gross axle weights of the two single axle units does not exceed the maximum permissible gross axle weight for a single axle unit; (d) a truck and full trailer combination, A-train or C-train where the full trailer is equipped with more than two axle units which are in contact with the ground; or (e) a pony trailer equipped with more than one axle unit. Tridem drive trucks — prohibited trailers 25 A person must not drive or operate a truck equipped with a tridem drive axle group in combination with a pony trailer or full trailer. M.R. 104/2023 Axles and axle spreads 26(1) A person must not drive or operate on a highway a truck or truck tractor in combination with (a) a semi-trailer equipped with a tridem axle having an axle spread of less than 2.4 m or more than 3.7 m; (b) a pony trailer equipped with a tridem axle having an axle spread of less than 2.4 m or more than 2.5 m; (c) a trailer converter dolly equipped with (i) a tandem or tridem axle unit in the case of an A-train or C-train, or (ii) a tridem axle unit in the case of a truck and full trailer combination; or (d) a B-train equipped with a tridem axle having an axle spread of less than 2.4 m or more than 3.1 m. 26(2) A person must not drive or operate on a highway a vehicle or combination of vehicles if the interaxle spacing between an axle unit set out in Column 1 of the table in Schedule C and an adjacent axle unit set out opposite in Column 2 is less than the minimum permissible interaxle spacing set out opposite in Column 3. 26(3) Despite subsection (2), a person must not drive or operate on a highway an A-train or C-train with an interaxle spacing of less than 3 m between the rear axle on the lead semi-trailer and the axle of the trailer converter dolly, unless (a) the sum of the gross axle weight of a single axle semi-trailer and the weight carried by the trailer converter dolly does not exceed the maximum permissible gross axle weight for a tandem axle unit; or (b) the sum of the gross axle weight of a tandem axle semi-trailer and the weight carried by the trailer converter dolly does not exceed the maximum permissible gross axle weight for a tridem axle unit with an axle spread of 3 m or more, but less than 3.6 m. Lift axles restricted 27(1) In this section, "lift axle" means an axle of a vehicle that is constructed with a device capable of raising the wheels on the axle from contact with the highway. 27(2) A person must not drive or operate on a highway a vehicle equipped with a lift axle if the tires of the lift axle are in contact with the ground, unless (a) the lift axle is installed on a semi-trailer or a full trailer; (b) the lift axle forms part of an axle group; (c) the lift axle is not a self-steering axle; (d) the lift axle complies with the trailer wheelbase and effective overhang requirements in both the raised and the lowered position; (e) the control for raising and lowering the lift axle is set up in one of the following manners: (i) the control switch is located so that the vehicle operator is unable to raise or lower the lift axle from inside the cab of the motor vehicle towing the trailer, (ii) the lift axle is automatically raised and lowered — without operator involvement — and configured to (A) be raised, and remain in the raised position, when the trailer is empty, and (B) be in contact with the ground and fully weight-bearing, with the weight evenly distributed between the different axles in the axle group, when the trailer is carrying a load; and (f) the lift axle is designed so that in case of failure it either (i) fails with the tires not in contact with the ground, or (ii) fails with the tires in contact with the ground in a fully weight-bearing manner. C-dolly prohibited on specified vehicles 28 A person must not drive or operate on a highway a truck and full trailer combination if the full trailer is equipped with a C-dolly. Tire, axle and trailer loads 29(1) Subject to subsection (2), a person must not drive or operate a vehicle on a highway if the gross weight on a tire (a) on the vehicle's steering axle exceeds the rated capacity of the tire, as rated by the tire's manufacturer; or (b) on another of the vehicle's axles exceeds the lesser of (i) the rated capacity of the tire, as rated by the tire's manufacturer, and (ii) 3,000 kg. 29(2) Subsection (1) does not apply to a tire that is a wide-base single tire. 29(3) A person must not drive or operate a vehicle on a class A1, A or B1 highway if the gross weight on a wide-base single tire on the vehicle exceeds the lesser of (a) the rated capacity of the tire, as rated by the manufacturer of the tire; or (b) 3,850 kg. 29(4) A person must not drive or operate a vehicle on a class B or C highway if the gross weight on a wide-base single tire on the vehicle exceeds the lesser of (a) the rated capacity of the tire, as rated by the manufacturer of the tire; or (b) 3,000 kg. 29(5) A person must not drive or operate on a highway a vehicle or combination of vehicles where (a) the gross axle weight on an axle unit exceeds the axle, suspension or brake manufacturer's rating of that component; or (b) the gross vehicle weight on a trailer exceeds the manufacturer's rating for that trailer. PART 8 PERMISSIBLE AXLE WEIGHTS AND VEHICLE WEIGHT ON CLASSES OF HIGHWAYS Definitions 30 The following definitions apply in this Part. "axle unit under consideration" means the axle unit for which a calculation of maximum permissible gross axle weight is being performed. (« bloc essieu en question ») "downloading factor" means a reduction in maximum permissible gross axle weight calculated under section 32 when the interaxle spacing between adjacent axle units is less than the minimum permissible interaxle spacing for axle units of their respective types set out in Schedule C. (« coefficient de pondération ») Maximum permissible gross axle weights 31(1) A person must not drive or operate on a highway a vehicle or combination of vehicles if the gross axle weight on any axle unit (including a steering axle) on the vehicle or on any vehicle in the combination exceeds, by a weight less than 2,000 kg, the maximum permissible gross axle weight for the type of axle unit and vehicle for the class of highway, determined by applying to each axle unit whichever of the following formulas applies to it: (a) in the case of an axle unit that is equipped with tires that are not wide-base single tires, the applicable formula is GAW = [the lesser of PGAW or (T × K × N)] − (D 1 + D 2 ) In this formula, GAW is the maximum permissible gross axle weight of the axle unit under consideration, PGAW is the maximum permissible gross axle weight for the type of axle unit and vehicle for the class of highway set out in Schedule D, T is the width in millimetres of a tire on the axle unit under consideration or, if the tires are not of uniform width, is the width in millimetres of the narrowest tire, K is the maximum permissible weight per millimetre of tire width for the class of highway set out in subsection 1(4) of Schedule D, N is the number of tires on the axle unit under consideration, D 1 if applicable, is the downloading factor calculated in respect of the axle unit under consideration or the portion of the downloading factor that is not applied to the adjacent axle unit involved in the calculation, D 2 if applicable, is the portion of any second downloading factor applied to the axle unit under consideration as the result of a downloading factor calculation involving an adjacent axle unit other than the one referred to in item D 1 ; (b) in the case of an axle unit (non-steering) that is equipped with wide-base single tires and is on a vehicle being driven or operated elsewhere than on an RTAC route, the applicable formula is GAW = [the lesser of PGAW or (K x N)] − (D 1 + D 2 ) In this formula, GAW is the maximum permissible gross axle weight of the axle unit for the class of highway, PGAW is the maximum permissible gross axle weight for the axle unit for the class of highway as set out in Schedule D, K is the maximum permissible gross weight for a tire on the axle unit for the class of highway as set out in subsection 29(3), N is the number of tires on the axle unit, D 1 if applicable, is the downloading factor calculated in respect of the axle unit under consideration or the portion of the downloading factor that is not applied to the adjacent axle unit involved in the calculation, D 2 if applicable, is the portion of any second downloading factor applied to the axle unit under consideration as the result of a downloading factor calculation involving an adjacent axle unit other than the one referred to in item D 1 ; and (c) in the case of an axle unit (non-steering) that is equipped with wide-base single tires and is on a vehicle being driven or operated on an RTAC route, the applicable formula is GAW = [the lesser of PGAW or (T x K x N)] −

This provision sets highway weight limits, seasonal allowance rules, and permit-related equipment and escort requirements for overdimensional vehicles.
(D 1 + D 2 ) In this formula, GAW is the maximum permissible gross axle weight of the axle unit for the class of highway, PGAW is the maximum permissible gross axle weight for the axle unit for the class of highway set out in Schedule D, T is the total width in millimetres of a tire on the axle unit or, if the tires are not of uniform width, is the width of the narrowest tire, K is the maximum permissible weight per millimetre of tire width set out in subsection 1(4) of Schedule D, N is the number of tires on the axle unit, D 1 if applicable, is the downloading factor calculated in respect of the axle unit under consideration or the portion of the downloading factor that is not applied to the adjacent axle unit involved in the calculation, D 2 if applicable, is the portion of any second downloading factor applied to the axle unit under consideration as the result of a downloading factor calculation involving an adjacent axle unit other than the one referred to in item D 1 . 31(2) A person must not drive or operate on a highway a vehicle or combination of vehicles if the gross axle weight on any axle unit (including a steering axle) on the vehicle or on any vehicle in the combination exceeds, by a weight of 2,000 kg or more, the maximum permissible gross axle weight for the type of axle unit and vehicle for the class of highway determined by applying to each axle unit the formula set out in subsection (1) that applies to the particular configuration of axle unit and tires. 31(3) A person must not drive or operate on a highway a combination of vehicles consisting of a truck and (a) a two-axle full trailer if the sum of the gross axle weights of all axle units on the full trailer exceeds 17,000 kg (i) by a weight less than 2,000 kg, or (ii) by a weight of 2,000 kg or more; (b) a three-axle full trailer if the sum of the gross axle weights of all axle units on the full trailer exceeds 24,000 kg (i) by a weight less than 2,000 kg, or (ii) by a weight of 2,000 kg or more; or (c) a full trailer having four or more axles if the sum of the gross axle weights of all axle units on the full trailer exceeds 31,000 kg (i) by a weight less than 2,000 kg, or (ii) by a weight of 2,000 kg or more. 31(4) A person must not drive or operate an A-train on a highway if the sum of the gross axle weights of all axle units on the full trailer exceeds the sum of the gross axle weights of the drive axle unit and the axle unit of the lead semi-trailer (a) by a weight less than 2,000 kg; or (b) by a weight of 2,000 kg or more. 31(5) A person must not drive or operate a C-train on a highway if (a) the sum of the gross axle weights of all axle units on the lead semi-trailer and the C-dolly exceeds 23,000 kg (i) by a weight less than 2,000 kg, or (ii) by a weight of 2,000 kg or more; or (b) the sum of the gross axle weights of all axle units on the full trailer exceeds the sum of the gross axle weights of the drive axle unit and the axle unit of the lead semi-trailer (i) by a weight less than 2,000 kg, or (ii) by a weight of 2,000 kg or more. Downloading factor when adjacent axle units have less than the permissible interaxle spacing 32(1) For the purpose of the formulas in subsection 31(1), when the interaxle spacing between the axle unit under consideration and an adjacent axle unit is less than the minimum permissible interaxle spacing set out in Schedule C, a downloading factor is to be calculated in accordance with the following formula: D = W × S In this formula, D is the downloading factor to be applied to reduce the maximum permissible gross axle weight of either of the axle units or to be divided between them; W is 500 kg; S is the number of units of 0.1 m, including any partial unit, by which the interaxle spacing between the two axle units is less than the minimum permissible interaxle spacing for axle units of their respective types set out in Schedule C. 32(2) Having calculated a downloading factor under subsection (1), a peace officer (a) may apply to either of the axle units the total downloading factor calculated under subsection (1) or the peace officer may divide it between them in any proportion the peace officer considers appropriate; and (b) is to perform only one downloading factor calculation for the same two axle units. 32(3) To avoid doubt, if an axle unit under consideration has two axle units adjacent to it (one forward and one rearward) and both sets of interaxle spacings are less than the minimum permissible interaxle spacings set out in whichever of Schedule C, (a) a separate calculation under subsection (1) is to be made in respect of each pair of adjacent axle units; and (b) the maximum permissible gross axle weight of the axle unit under consideration may be reduced as the result of both the calculations. Maximum permissible gross vehicle weight generally 33(1) A person must not drive or operate on a highway a vehicle or combination of vehicles if the gross vehicle weight of the vehicle or combination of vehicles exceeds, by a weight less than 2,000 kg, the lesser of (a) the maximum gross vehicle weight for vehicles on the class of highway set out in Schedule D; and (b) the sum of the maximum permissible gross axle weights of all axle units determined by applying to each of the vehicle's axle units the formula set out in subsection 32(1) that applies to the particular configuration of axle unit and tires. 33(2) A person must not drive or operate on a highway a vehicle or combination of vehicles, if the gross vehicle weight of the vehicle or combination of vehicles exceeds, by a weight of 2,000 kg or more, the lesser of (a) the maximum gross vehicle weight for vehicles on the class of highway set out in Schedule D; and (b) the sum of the maximum permissible gross axle weights of all axle units determined by applying to each of the vehicle's axle units the formula set out in subsection 32(1) that applies to the particular configuration of axle unit and tires. Maximum permissible gross vehicle weight for A-trains and C-trains 34(1) Despite section 33, a person must not drive or operate on a class A1 highway or RTAC route an A-train or C-train manufactured on or after July 1, 1988 if its gross vehicle weight exceeds 53,500 kg (a) by a weight less than 2,000 kg; or (b) by a weight of 2,000 kg or more. 34(2) Despite section 33, a person must not drive or operate on an RTAC route an A-train or C-train manufactured before July 1, 1988 if its gross vehicle weight exceeds 56,500 kg (a) by a weight less than 2,000 kg; or (b) by a weight of 2,000 kg or more. 34(3) Subsections (1) and (2) do not apply to C-train with a C-dolly that is driven or operated on an RTAC route if the C-dolly (a) satisfies testing requirements determined by the National Research Council (Canada); and (b) displays, in a conspicuous place on both its sides, a label from the manufacturer certifying satisfaction of those requirements. 34(4) Despite section 33, a person must not drive or operate a C-train referred to in subsection (3) on an RTAC route if its gross vehicle weight exceeds 60,500 kg (a) by a weight less than 2,000 kg; or (b) by a weight of 2,000 kg or more. Additional weight allowance for auxiliary power unit 34.1(1) A vehicle or combination of vehicles equipped with an auxiliary power unit may exceed by 225 kg any maximum gross vehicle weight specified by sections 33 and 34. 34.1(2) For the purpose of determining permissible axle group weights, the weight allowance may be (a) added to the drive axle; or (b) split between the drive axle and the steering axle in a manner that does not add more than 50% of the allowance to the steering axle. M.R. 104/2023 Minimum steering axle weight — single/tridem combination 35 A person must not drive or operate on a highway a vehicle that is equipped with a single steering axle and tridem drive axle group unless the vehicle's gross weight is distributed so that the axle weight of the steering axle is not less than 27% of the axle weight of the tridem drive axle group. However, this section is not to be interpreted as affecting the application of any provision of this regulation respecting the maximum permissible axle weight of the steering axle. Minimum steering axle weight — tandem/tridem combination 36 A person must not drive or operate on a highway a vehicle that is equipped with a tandem steering axle and tridem drive axle group unless the vehicle's gross weight is distributed so that the axle weight of the steering axle is not less than 40% of the axle weight of the tridem drive axle group. However, this section is not to be interpreted as affecting the application of any provision of this regulation respecting the maximum permissible axle weight of the steering axle. Seasonal variation of maximum permissible axle weights 37(1) The maximum permissible gross axle weights set out in Schedule D for the following axle/highway class combinations are increased as follows during the period that begins as specified in an order described in clause (2)⁠(a) and ends as specified in an order described in clause (2)⁠(b): (a) for a single axle on an RTAC route the increase is 10%; (b) for a tandem axle on an RTAC route the increase is 10% up to but not exceeding a maximum permissible gross axle weight of 17,600 kg; and (c) for a single axle or tandem axle on a class A1 or B1 highway the increase is 10%. 37(2) To take into consideration annual variations in seasonal climatic conditions that alter the load-bearing capacities of RTAC routes and class A1 and B1 highways, the minister or the minister's delegate may by order establish the following, as permitted by subsection 68(3.2) of the Act: (a) the day on which subsection (1) begins to apply in respect of any winter season; (b) the day on which subsection (1) ceases to apply in respect of any winter season. PART 9 OVERDIMENSIONAL VEHICLES AND PILOT VEHICLES Definition 38 In this Part and in Schedule E, "permit" means a permit issued under the Act authorizing an overdimensional vehicle or vehicle carrying an overdimensional load to be driven on a highway. Flags on overdimensional vehicles 39 When a permit authorizes an overdimensional vehicle or vehicle carrying an overdimensional load to be driven during the daytime, the permit holder and the vehicle's driver and operator must ensure that the vehicle is equipped with (a) a red or orange flag not less than 30 cm square, visible at a distance of 60 m, (i) on each of the four corners of the vehicle, or (ii) if the load projects further than the vehicle, on each of the four corners of the load; or (b) clearance lamps that comply with section 41 and are illuminated while the vehicle is driven on a highway. M.R. 104/2023 Signs on overdimensional vehicles 40(1) A permit may require an overdimensional vehicle or vehicle carrying an overdimensional load to carry a "WIDE LOAD", "LONG LOAD", "OVERSIZE LOAD" or "D" sign. 40(2) If a permit requires an overdimensional vehicle or vehicle carrying an overdimensional load to carry one of the signs described in subsection (1), the permit holder and the vehicle's driver and operator must ensure that (a) the sign meets the specifications for the type of sign set out in Schedule E; and (b) the sign is mounted in a conspicuous position. Clearance lamps for travel during the nighttime 41(1) When a permit authorizes an overdimensional vehicle or vehicle carrying an overdimensional load to be driven during the nighttime, the permit holder and the vehicle's driver and operator must ensure that the vehicle is equipped with the following clearance lamps mounted in a conspicuous position as near the top of the vehicle or its load as is practicable: (a) two lamps, each of which casts an amber light visible from an oncoming vehicle, one located on the left side and one on the right side of the front of the vehicle or its load; (b) two lamps, each of which casts a red light visible from a vehicle approaching from the rear, one located on the left side and one on the right side of the back of the vehicle or its load; (c) two lamps, each of which casts an amber light visible from an oncoming vehicle and a red light visible from a vehicle approaching from the rear, that are so positioned that one is on the portion of the vehicle or its load that projects furthest to the right and one is on that portion of the vehicle or its load that projects furthest to the left. 41(2) When subsection (1) applies to a vehicle, the permit holder and the vehicle's driver and operator must ensure that the clearance lamps are lighted when the vehicle is driven on a highway during the nighttime. Warning lamp 41.1(1) An overdimensional vehicle or a vehicle carrying an overdimensional load operated under a permit may be equipped with a rotating, oscillating, pulsating or flashing amber lamp and the vehicle's driver or operator may operate the lamp on a highway. 41.1(2) The permit may require the vehicle to be equipped with a rotating, oscillating, pulsating or flashing amber lamp and may require the vehicle's driver or operator to operate the lamp on a highway. M.R. 104/2023 Pilot vehicles 42(1) When a permit requires an overdimensional vehicle or vehicle carrying an overdimensional load to be escorted by a pilot vehicle, the permit holder and the vehicle's driver and operator must ensure that — except as otherwise provided in the permit — the vehicle is escorted by a pilot vehicle and that the pilot vehicle complies with this Part and has the equipment and sign required by it. 42(2) A pilot vehicle must be a motor vehicle (a) the height of which is such that (i) the bottom edge of a top-mounted sign sits (A) not more than 5 cm above the roof of the vehicle, and (B) not less than 1.6 m and not more than 2.5 m above the road surface, and (ii) when a sign is mounted as required under subclause (i), the sign is visible to other traffic from the front and the rear; and (b) that is large enough and has sufficient load-carrying capacity to carry the equipment and sign that this Part or the permit requires. 42(3) A pilot vehicle must not tow another vehicle. Equipment and signs on pilot vehicles 43(1) A pilot vehicle must (a) be equipped with a hands-free communications device that allows the pilot vehicle's driver to communicate with the driver of the overdimensional vehicle or vehicle carrying an overdimensional load; (b) be equipped with a stop/slow paddle, high visibility safety apparel, protective headwear and a flashlight that comply with subsection 20.6(2) of the Workplace Safety and Health Regulation , Manitoba Regulation 217/2006; (c) be equipped with a fire extinguisher that complies with National Fire Protection Association Standard NFPA 10, Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers and is in good working order; (d) be equipped with flares or reflectors for hazard warning that (i) are visible from a distance of 150 m under normal atmospheric conditions, and (ii) conform to any standards that apply to them under the Act; (e) be equipped with at least one roof-mounted flashing amber lamp that, when lighted, is capable of emitting a beam of light clearly visible from a distance of 300 m in normal daylight and is in good working order; and (f) when escorting an overdimensional vehicle or vehicle carrying an overdimensional load that is required by permit to have a sign mentioned in section 40, must carry a sign that meets the requirements of subsection (2). 43(2) The sign required by clause (1)⁠(f) must (a) be constructed of durable material suitable for use of the sign in all weather and highway conditions; (b) comply with the requirements for design, colour and dimensions set out in Schedule F; (c) be evenly illuminated so that each face of the sign is clearly visible from a distance of 300 m in the ambient lighting conditions in which the pilot vehicle is being operated; (d) have a sign box that is sheltering all wire connectors, switches, flashers and similar wiring components for the wiring attached to the sign; (e) if the maximum luminance is more than 100 cd/m 2 , be adjustable to a nighttime setting of 100 cd/m 2 or less; (f) have mounted on it two outboard amber lamps (one at each end) that (i) comply with Society of Automotive Engineers Standard J595, Directional Flashing Optical Warning Devices for Authorized Emergency, Maintenance and Service Vehicles , and (ii) flash in unison; (g) have mounted on it two inboard rotating lamps or strobe lamps (one on each end) that (i) operate only when adverse weather and highway conditions are encountered, and (ii) comply with Society of Automotive Engineers Standard J845, Optical Warning Devices for Authorized Emergency, Maintenance, and Service Vehicles ; (h) have separate circuits to prevent simultaneous operation of the two lighting systems described in clauses (f) and (g) and be controlled by a three-way on-off switch; (i) be designed to mount on car-top carriers or a comparable mounting method; (j) be capable of being covered, blacked out or folded down when not in use; and (k) be securely attached to the pilot vehicle. M.R. 32/2019 ; 104/2023 Prohibition on misuse of signs 44 A person must not drive or operate on a highway a vehicle or a combination of vehicles displaying a sign indicating the presence of an overdimensional vehicle or vehicle carrying an overdimensional load unless the person is (a) driving or operating an overdimensional vehicle or vehicle carrying an overdimendsional load; or (b) driving or operating a pilot vehicle that is escorting an overdimensional vehicle or vehicle carrying an overdimensional load. Proximity of pilot vehicle to escorted vehicle 45 A person driving or operating a pilot vehicle that is escorting an overdimensional vehicle or vehicle carrying an overdimensional load must (a) precede or follow the escorted vehicle, as set out in the permit; and (b) stay within a distance from the escorted vehicle that is (i) between the minimum and maximum distance set out in the permit, or (ii) if the permit does not stipulate a minimum and maximum distance, a distance that is reasonably prudent considering the speed of the escorted vehicle, the presence of other traffic, and the prevailing highway conditions. For certainty, a permit may require one pilot vehicle to precede the escorted vehicle and a second pilot vehicle to follow the escorted vehicle. 46 [Repealed] M.R. 104/2023 PART 10 47 [Repealed] M.R. 32/2019 PART 11 REPEAL AND COMING INTO FORCE Repeal 48 The Vehicle Weights and Dimensions on Classes of Highways Regulation , Manitoba Regulation 575/88, is repealed. Coming into force 49 This regulation comes into force on February 15, 2019 or the day it is registered under The Statutes and Regulations Act , whichever is later.
