Disqualified persons Schedule Be it enacted by the Lieutenant-Governor and House of Assembly in Legislative Session convened, as follows: Short title 1. This Act may be cited as the Volunteer Service Medal Act. 1996 cV-6.1 s1 Back to Top Definitions 2. In this Act (a) "selection committee" means the Volunteer Service Medal Selection Committee established by section 4; and (b) "medal" means the Newfoundland and Labrador Volunteer Service Medal that is described in the Schedule. 1996 cV-6.1 s2 Back to Top Medal awarded 3. The government of the province shall award a medal to each person (a) who is a Canadian citizen and is a current or was a long-term resident of the province; (b) who has provided a volunteer service to his or her community, without reward or gain, in an area that is beyond his or her normal duties or responsibility, for a minimum of 10 years; and (c) who has been recommended by the selection committee as a person considered deserving of the award. 1996 cV-6.1 s3 Back to Top Selection committee 4. (1) There is established a selection committee to be know as the Volunteer Service Medal Selection Committee. (2) The selection committee shall be comprised of 7 members appointed as follows: (a) the Lieutenant-Governor in Council shall appoint (i) a chairperson who shall serve in that capacity for a maximum of 3 years, and (ii) 3 additional members; and (b) 3 members shall be appointed by virtue of their office as follows: (i) the Clerk of the Executive Council, (ii) the Chief Justice of Newfoundland and Labrador, with the Chief Justice of the Trial Division acting as his or her alternate, and (iii) the President of the Memorial University of Newfoundland, and with a head of a community college as his or her alternate. 1996 cV-6.1 s4 ; 2001 cN-3.1 s2 Back to Top Duties of selection committee 5. The selection committee shall consider nominations for the medal and recommend to the Lieutenant-Governor in Council those persons considered suitable for such an award. 1996 cV-6.1 s5 Back to Top Deceased person 6. Where a person who would be eligible to receive a medal under this Act has died since the recommendation for an award was made public, a medal may be presented to a relative of the volunteer on behalf of that volunteer as prescribed by the regulations. 1996 cV-6.1 s6 Back to Top Disqualified persons 7. A member of the House of Assembly, a member of the House of Commons or Senate of Canada or a judge of a court of Canada or of a province is not eligible to receive a medal. 1996 cV-6.1 s7 Back to Top Schedule The medal is circular in shape and is inscribed and decorated as follows: (a) The Obverse Side - (Design to follow) The entire motif is surrounded on the outside rim by the words " Newfoundland and Labrador Volunteer Service Medal"; and (b) The Reverse Side - (Design to follow) The motto suggested is: "NON SIBI SED OMNIBUS" "NOT FOR YOURSELF BUT FOR OTHERS". 1996 cV-6.1 Sch.
