Statute overview

About this statute

This part defines key terms, sets the Act’s scope, and requires actions under the Act to respect applicable land claims agreements. This part establishes the Conference and SARC, sets reporting and public-access duties, and lays out the species assessment and listing process with several deadlines. The provision sets rules for extending species listing terms, reassessing listed species, and developing consensus agreements and management/recovery plans. This part requires the Conference and Minister to make certain reports and public statements, and gives the Minister powers to enter habitat agreements, issue permits, grant exemptions, and appoint enforcement officers. This provision lets officers get warrants for searches, seizures, and investigative techniques, allows some warrantless searches in urgent cases, requires cooperation from people at the place entered, and sets rules for seizure, detention, return, and forfeiture of seized things.
