Statute overview

About this statute

This provision defines key terms, binds the Government of the Northwest Territories, and sets the main rule against discharging contaminants into the environment unless an exception applies. Owners and occupiers must not let land become unsightly. The Act also sets rules for permits and licences, contaminant discharge registration, inspections, appeals, and penalties. This provision lets the Government recover cleanup-related costs from responsible persons, and gives inspectors broad powers to request records, inspect, search, seize, and deal with contaminated things.
