Statute overview

About this statute

The Law Society of Yukon is created, and the executive and society are given governance powers. Non-members generally cannot practise law, subject to listed exceptions. This provision gives the executive broad rule-making powers and sets how rules, meetings, voting, admissions, and certificates work. This provision sets out how complaints about a member’s conduct are handled and what discipline outcomes may follow if conduct deserving of censure is found. This provision covers discipline procedures for students-at-law, appeals and reinstatement, and the special fund, professional liability fund, and insurance rules for members. Members must place client trust money into trust accounts, keep required records, file certain notices and reports, and follow strict rules for trust property, audits, and fee agreements.
