The Minister of Veterans Affairs must pay specified gallantry gratuities and annuities, and the Order sets the amounts and eligibility rules for different medal holders.
ORDER RESPECTING GALLANTRY AWARDS His Excellency the Governor General in Council, on the recommendation of the Minister of Veterans Affairs and the Treasury Board, is pleased hereby to revoke the Gallantry Gratuities and Annuities Order, made by Order in Council P.C. 1987-1960 of September 17, 1987, and Orders in Council P.C. 1960-41/526 of April 21, 1960 and P.C. 1965-36/1401 of August 6, 1965, and to make the annexed Order respecting gallantry awards, in substitution therefor. This Order may be cited as the Gallantry Awards Order. In this Order, "member of the armed services of Canada" includes a member of the British forces who enlisted before March 31, 1949 while domiciled in Canada or Newfoundland. The Minister of Veterans Affairs shall pay, out of the moneys appropriated for the purpose by Parliament, any gratuities and annuities arising out of any award made by His Majesty King George VI or Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, in respect of gallantry by any member of the armed services of Canada. The payment of gratuities and annuities pursuant to section 3 shall be made in the following manner: holders of the Victoria Cross or the George Cross shall receive an annuity of $3,000; holders of the Distinguished Service Cross, Military Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross, Distinguished Conduct Medal, Conspicuous Gallantry Medal, Distinguished Service Medal, Military Medal or Distinguished Flying Medal, who are not in receipt of disability or long service pensions, shall receive on discharge, a gratuity of $100; holders of the Victoria Cross, Distinguished Service Cross, Military Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross, Distinguished Conduct Medal, Conspicuous Gallantry Medal, Distinguished Service Medal, Military Medal or Distinguished Flying Medal, who have been awarded a disability pension, war veterans allowance or long service pension, shall receive an annuity of $50; and qualified holders of the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal shall continue to receive an annuity of $100. An annuity referred to in paragraph (1)(c) shall be payable from the date of the award of the disability pension, war veterans allowance or long service pension, as the case may be, except that in the case of commissioned officers, the annuity shall not be payable in respect of any period before August 24, 1972; and in the case of a member of the British forces who enlisted before March 31, 1949 while domiciled in Canada or Newfoundland, the annuity shall not be payable while the member is receiving any gallantry award from the British government, or for any month before January 1, 1990.
