Statute overview

About this statute

This preamble identifies Law 33 of 1992 as approving the treaties on international civil law and international commercial law signed in Montevideo. A person’s capacity is governed by the laws of their domicile. Changing domicile does not change capacity already acquired through emancipation, reaching majority, or judicial authorization. The State, as a legal person, may acquire rights and take on obligations in another State’s territory, subject to that State’s laws. Private legal persons are governed by the laws of the country where they are recognized, may exercise their rights outside their place of institution, and must follow the host State’s rules for acts within their special purpose.
