Statute overview

About this statute

The preamble says hazardous waste and other waste should be strictly controlled, moved only safely, and managed in a way that protects human health and the environment. This article defines which wastes are covered as hazardous or other wastes when they move across borders, and excludes certain radioactive wastes and ship-operation wastes from the Convention. This article defines key terms used in the convention, including waste, handling, transboundary movement, approved sites, competent authorities, contact points, and several actor roles.
