Statute overview

About this statute

This preamble says Colombia approves the Hague Convention on intercountry adoption. This article states the Convention’s purposes for international adoptions: protect the child’s best interests and fundamental rights, create cooperation among contracting states to safeguard those protections, prevent child abduction, sale, or trafficking, and ensure recognition of adoptions made under the Convention. The Convention applies to certain intercountry adoptions involving a child habitually resident in one contracting state who is moved to another contracting state. The Convention stops applying if the required acceptances are not granted before the child turns 18. Las autoridades competentes del Estado de origen sólo pueden permitir adopciones si verifican que el niño es adoptable y que la adopción internacional responde a su interés superior, y si comprueban varias condiciones sobre consentimientos e información.
