Statute overview

About this statute

This provision approves a protocol aimed at protecting the Southeast Pacific from radioactive pollution. This article sets the Convention’s geographic scope for the Southeast Pacific maritime area and, in some cases, an extended continental shelf. The contracting parties must prohibit dumping radioactive waste and other radioactive substances at sea or on the seabed, and also burying such waste or substances in the subsoil of the sea, within the Convention’s scope. Las Altas Partes Contratantes deben tomar medidas para que las actividades bajo su control no causen contaminación y no realizar ciertas actividades fuera de las áreas bajo su soberanía o jurisdicción. This article says the ban on radioactive waste and radioactive substances covers dumping and burying them; if there is doubt, the ban applies until the Executive Secretariat confirms the material is innocuous.
