Statute overview

About this statute

This preamble says Colombia and Spain approved an additional protocol and related note exchange to modify their 1979 double-nationality convention. Certain Colombian-born or Spanish-origin nationals keep the right to exercise rights from their original nationality after acquiring the other nationality and moving there; some may recover civil and political rights by written notice to the consul or designated authority. A person with Colombian and Spanish nationality must not state their original nationality to the authorities of the adopting state, and must not state their adopted nationality to the authorities of the state of birth. Parts of the Nationality Convention that conflict with this modifying protocol are treated as repealed; the rest remains in force. This protocol enters into force on the first day of the second month after both parties notify each other that their internal procedures are complete.
