Statute overview

About this statute

The provision gives adoptive children rights to use surnames and middle names from their adoptive or original family line, sets rules for first names, and assigns naming-related powers to the minister, Familieretshuset, and person register officials. Section 24 requires most name-change and naming applications to be submitted digitally, sets fees and exceptions, and gives rules for child name changes, appeals, and penalties. If paternity was established or acknowledged under pre-1938 rules, or only maintenance liability was established, a name change to the father’s or liable person’s name may only be allowed with that person’s consent.
