Statute overview

About this statute

This preamble says the law implements parts of several EU directives and defines key terms and responsibilities for seafarer employment. Section 29 gives seafarers rights to wages, sick pay, care, and travel benefits, and sets the shipowner’s and master’s duties when a seafarer is sick, injured, or dies. Rederen skal have en skriftlig aftale med skibsføreren, og skibsføreren og søfarende har flere pligter og rettigheder om bord, bl.a. om klagebehandling, landgang i fritiden, orden og sikkerhed. Section 73 sets a fine for a seafarer who knowingly breaches certain duties and makes a complaint that triggers an inspection; it also gives the minister and the maritime authority rule-making powers and requires shipowners to provide financial security for abandoned seafarers. Skibsføreren must sørge for onboard copies of specified labour documents, and certain commercial ships of 500 GT or more must not sail internationally without the required certificate and declaration.
