Statute overview

About this statute

Los Académicos de Número son los únicos que pueden ocupar esos cargos; la votación es secreta, se permite el voto por carta para quienes no puedan asistir si cumplen las condiciones del reglamento interno, y los designados deben obtener mayoría absoluta. Certain offices covered by earlier articles have a three-year term and cannot be held by the same person for more than nine consecutive years. The President can be reelected only with two-thirds of votes cast and cannot serve more than two consecutive three-year terms. The Academy chooses its members from among qualified persons in the sciences it studies. To be an Académico de Número, a person must be Spanish, have a reputation for public exemplary conduct, and be publicly known for expertise in the Academy’s subject matter. When a vacancy arises for an Académico de Número, the Academy must declare it at its next ordinary meeting and notify the Ministry within three months for publication in the Official State Gazette. After publication, proposals may be admitted only if signed by three Académicos de Número and accompanied by a written report on the candidate’s relevant merits.
