| Official Journal of the European Union | EN C series ---|---|--- * * * | C/2026/3614 | 9.7.2026 ---|---|--- COUNCIL DECISION of 29 June 2026 appointing members and alternate members of the Management Board of the European Food Safety Authority representing civil society and food chain interests (C/2026/3614) THE COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION, Having regard to the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, Having regard to Regulation (EC) No 178/2002 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 28 January 2002 laying down the general principles and requirements of food law, establishing the European Food Safety Authority and laying down procedures in matters of food safety (1), and in particular Article 25(1a), point (c), thereof, Having regard to the list of candidates submitted to the Council by the European Commission by letter dated 12 March 2026, Having regard to the views expressed by the European Parliament by letter dated 4 June 2026, Whereas: (1) | Regulation (EC) No 178/2002 established the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which has a Management Board as one of its bodies. ---|--- (2) | Regulation (EC) No 178/2002 requires that the EFSA Management Board include four members and four alternate members with the right to vote as representatives of civil society and food chain interests, namely one member and one alternate member from consumer organisations, one member and one alternate member from environmental non-governmental organisations, one member and one alternate member from farmers organisations, and one member and one alternate member from industry organisations. ---|--- (3) | The members and alternate members representing civil society and food chain interests are to be appointed by the Council in consultation with the European Parliament on the basis of a list drawn up by the Commission and sent to the Council. Their term of office is to be four years and can be renewed only once. ---|--- (4) | In accordance with the Council Decision of 2 June 2022 (2), the term of office of the members and alternate members appointed to represent civil society and food chain interests pursuant to that Decision expires on 30 June 2026. ---|--- (5) | Representatives of civil society and food chain interests should therefore be appointed for a new term of office of four years, from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2030. ---|--- (6) | Regulation (EC) No 178/2002 requires that the members and the alternate members of the EFSA Management Board be nominated and appointed on the basis of their relevant and extensive experience and expertise in the field of food chain law and policy, including risk assessment, whilst ensuring that there is relevant expertise in the fields of managerial, administrative, financial and legal matters within the EFSA Management Board. ---|--- (7) | The list drawn up by the Commission has been examined with a view to appointing the four members and four alternate members of the EFSA Management Board representing civil society and food chain interests, on the basis of the documentation provided by the Commission and in light of the views expressed by the European Parliament.
