Statute overview

About this statute

Chapter 1: general provisions. Religion may be practiced publicly and privately in Finland, as long as law or good customs are not violated. This section defines which bodies are treated as religious communities under the law. Public religious worship events generally follow the Assembly Act rules for a general meeting, unless the event is part of a religious community’s customary activities and takes place in the community’s own or equivalent premises. Everyone is entitled to carry out private religious exercise. If it violates the law, the offender may be punished with a fine of up to 500 marks, unless the act is a different crime with a harsher penalty.
