Statute overview

About this statute

A Finland-resident entrepreneur must be insured against old age, disability, and death, unless one of the listed exceptions applies. Entrepreneurs must take the specified insurance from a qualifying pension institution or pension fund, may take it retroactively for the current and previous three calendar years, and generally may not take it after the entrepreneur’s death unless the earnings-related pension center makes an exception. The provision lists pension benefits available under the Act, gives entrepreneurs a right to rehabilitation and old-age pension, and sets conditions for part-time pension. Entrepreneur activity counts as pension-qualifying time from the month after a person turns 18 until the month after they turn 68, with corresponding application of Employee Pensions Act sections 7 c–7 e as applicable. The section sets how an entrepreneur’s annual earned income is determined for pension purposes, limits it to EUR 8,409.40, allows optional extra or reduced insurance premiums in some cases, and requires written notice to the pension institution when those premium choices are used.
