Statute overview

About this statute

Chapter on reporting a death and burial of a deceased person. Dödsfall must be reported immediately, and healthcare providers/doctors must report them to the population information system and the Institute for Health and Welfare; the Institute must then pass them on to Statistics Finland. Statistics Finland must store the documents and information it receives. A deceased person may be buried or the body handed over to a university for medical teaching or research only after the cause of death has been investigated and a burial permit has been issued. Social- och hälsovårdsministeriet får meddela föreskrifter om förfarandet vid medicinsk utredning av dödsorsak. Medical autopsy for determining cause of death may be performed if the deceased was treated by a doctor during the last illness and the autopsy is necessary for public health care.
