Statute overview

About this statute

This chapter is labeled as general provisions. The law applies to contract work performed by an employee for an employer under the employer’s direction and supervision, for pay or other compensation, aboard a Finnish ship or temporarily elsewhere on the employer’s order, subject to stated exceptions. This section exempts several categories of work from the law’s application. Employment contracts may be for a fixed term, a specific trip or trips, or until further notice. A worker gets a right to end the contract after notice in some cases, and may also cancel before work starts if the job begins more than a year later. The provision also allows probation periods of up to four months, or six months with qualifying training. Employment contracts must be in writing, include specified details, be made in four copies, and workers must be given certain ship information when the contract is signed.
