Statute overview

About this statute

This chapter is titled “General provisions.” The provision states the law’s purpose: it covers water management, related investigations, cooperation and participation in water management areas, and international cooperation, with the aim of protecting and improving waters and keeping surface water and groundwater at least in good status. This section defines key water-related terms used in the law. A water management area consists of one or more catchment areas; coastal water stretches and groundwater bodies go to the most suitable adjacent area; catchments extending into another state form an international water management area as specially prescribed. The Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry supervise implementation of this law, and several named agencies must carry out assigned tasks under it.
