Statute overview

About this statute

The section says when a new temporary or continuous residence permit may be granted, including renewal, switching grounds, and some post-study or family-tie situations. This section limits the length of certain residence permits: a new fixed-term residence permit may be granted for up to three years, family-tie permits may not outlast the family member’s permit, and a graduate student may be granted a temporary residence permit in Finland for six months once after the previous permit ends. The district police may grant residence permits for certain family members of a Finnish citizen in Finland and for that person’s minor unmarried children. Section 79 says several categories of foreign nationals have the right to work, including people with certain residence permits, some family members, degree holders in Finland, certain permit holders in specialized roles, some workers whose employer has no place of business in Finland, and some mission workers. Some foreign nationals with a residence permit may work, and some may keep working or start a new job if specific permit conditions are met. If certain applications are rejected, they may not continue working.
