Statute overview

About this statute

This provision says the law applies to vessels and their use, and to arranging traffic control services for canal traffic in Finnish waters and the Saimaa Canal lease area. The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency may set age and competence requirements for certain vessels or individual vessels. Statsrådet may issue regulations on vessel construction, engines, equipment and accessories, and Trafiksäkerhetsverket may issue detailed technical rules and grant exemptions in certain cases. Traffic authorities decide on bans and restrictions for public waterways and other water areas. A competent regional environmental authority, or the Transport Safety Agency for commercial shipping craft, may prohibit or restrict the use of a motor-driven craft type in a specific area if its use causes particularly significant harm or inconvenience.
