Statute overview

About this statute

The provision defines “lots” as a person approved by Trafiksäkerhetsverket with a pilot certificate for pilot work in Finnish waters and on the leased part of the Saimaa Canal. Lotsverket must provide pilotage services in areas where pilotage is required under section 5, and no one else may provide pilotage services or carry on pilotage activities. Vissa fartyg är befriade från skyldigheten att anlita lots, och Trafiksäkerhetsverket kan i vissa fall ändå kräva lotsning. Lotsen must be responsible for the pilotage, show the ship’s master a route plan based on updated charts and other needed information, and monitor handling measures important for navigation safety and environmental protection. The pilot may bring an additional pilot on a pilotage voyage when needed for strong reasons related to weather, ice, navigation, or vessel manoeuvring.
