Statute overview

About this statute

This section says the regulation applies to broilers kept under the Animal Welfare Act, and also to broiler mothers, except for several listed provisions. This section defines several terms used in the regulation, including broiler breeder, flock, available area, daily mortality, and cumulative daily mortality. Broiler rearing units must be built and maintained to minimize injury risk, stay clean, allow disinfection, avoid toxic surface treatments, and be kept in good sanitary condition. The broiler rearing area must have adequate ventilation, lighting, and low noise, and all broilers must always have suitable bedding. Broiler rearing facilities over 33 kg live weight per square metre must have ventilation, and if needed heating and cooling, to keep air quality, temperature, and humidity within stated limits; they must also have backup electricity for mechanical ventilation during a power outage.
