Statute overview

About this statute

This section says the law applies to statistics covered by the EU statistical programme only insofar as the referenced EU regulation does not apply. This section defines which bodies count as statistical authorities and requires statistical authorities and other statistical producers to act independently, impartially, objectively, reliably, cost-effectively, and to protect statistical secrecy. The law’s purpose is to unify and make more efficient the principles and procedures used for collecting, processing, using, disclosing, and retaining data for statistical purposes. Statistical authorities must provide data suppliers with information about why the data is collected, how the statistics are produced, whether providing the data is mandatory or voluntary, the supplier’s rights, data protection, retention time, and other relevant circumstances. Statistics authorities and other authorities that produce statistics may keep statistical data only as long as needed for the law’s purpose, must destroy it within one year afterward unless Arkivverket orders permanent retention, and must take privacy, personal data, and business/trade secrecy protection into account when processing the data.
