Statute overview

About this statute

A new municipality must remain bilingual if a bilingual municipality is merged into it under the described conditions. A state authority must use the municipality’s language when writing to a monolingual municipality, use both languages when writing to a bilingual municipality, and use the recipient’s language when writing to universities and other educational institutions. In bilingual municipalities, the council’s meeting notices and minutes must be written in Finnish and Swedish. Authorities in bilingual municipalities must generally use Finnish and Swedish on public signs and notices, with limited exceptions.
