Statute overview

About this statute

Chapter heading on the principles of preliminary investigations and the rights of people taking part in them. During a preliminary investigation, a party may choose their own assistant, and certain persons must be informed about that right. A party may access certain preliminary investigation information after an investigation has begun, but access is limited while the investigation is ongoing and in some cases to protect important interests. A person suspected of a crime must be informed of several rights without delay and before being heard. A detained suspect must be informed without delay of specified rights, in writing and in the suspect’s language; a foreign detainee must also be told about the right to have a diplomatic mission or consulate notified.
