Statute overview

About this statute

An exception from subsection 1 says a driving permit is required when renewing, or replacing with a new one, a driving licence issued in another EU or EEA state than Finland. A driving licence must be reissued for a new period if the licence categories are expanded during its validity; some reissued licences remain valid until the same date as the licence they are based on. A driver’s license holder may obtain a duplicate license if the stated conditions are met; the duplicate is valid until the same date as the original license in certain cases. Transitional rules for driver's licences: older licences may continue to be recognised, but some must be renewed by 19 January 2033 to remain valid. Certain Finland-resident holders of truck or bus driving rights must show police a doctor’s certificate at ages 50, 55, 60, and 65 to keep the driving right valid, unless an exception applies.
