Statute overview

About this statute

This section says the law applies to lay judges in district courts and points to other laws for their status, right to stay in office, election, refusal of appointment, and handling of the assignment. A lay judge must be a Finnish citizen living in a municipality within the district court’s district, and must not be bankrupt, legally incapacitated, under 25, 65 or older, or in certain judicial, enforcement, prosecution, customs, police, or legal practice roles. Domstolsverket decides how many lay judges there are in district courts and may change the number in certain situations. The municipal council elects lay judges for a term matching the council’s own term. A lay judge must give the district court a report of their ties before starting the assignment and while the assignment continues.
