Statute overview

About this statute

A child may acquire Finnish citizenship at birth if the listed parentage, birthplace, and nationality conditions are met. A foreign national who does not obtain Finnish citizenship under Section 9 may obtain it by notification if a parent was a Finnish citizen and the listed birth/parentage conditions are met. A child may lose Finnish citizenship if paternity or maternity is annulled or challenged within the stated time limits, depending on a holistic assessment of the child’s situation.
