Statute overview

About this statute

The law says that registered religious communities may be granted the right to solemnize marriages under this law. A registered religious community may apply for marriage solemnization authority for a member if the member meets the listed eligibility conditions. The power to grant marriage authorisation belongs to the Digital and Population Data Services Agency, except in Åland where it belongs to the State Department of Åland. An application for vigselrätt must include specified identifying information and enclose the relevant person’s written consent and a statement of their familiarity with the task. A person who has been given marriage-officiant authority must handle the assignment carefully and properly.
