Statute overview

About this statute

Children with usual residence in Finland are subject to compulsory education. A person may be exempted if the stay in Finland is for studies, and the municipality of residence decides on the exemption after application. This section says the rules on fulfilling compulsory education in basic education are found in 26 § 1 mom. of the Basic Education Act. Compulsory education may also be fulfilled through the listed forms of education. A compulsory pupil who has not finished basic education by the end of the school year in the calendar year they turn 17 may fulfill compulsory schooling by attending basic education or other education referred to in section 4. A decision to interrupt compulsory education is made only after an application, and the education provider must first investigate alternatives and notify the student and guardians/legal representatives.
