Statute overview

About this statute

A person’s gender designation may be determined differently from the population register if the person states a lasting experience of belonging to the gender to be determined, has reached adulthood, and is a Finnish citizen or resident in Finland. A written application for gender determination must be filed with the Digital and Population Data Services Agency; the applicant must later confirm it in writing, and the agency then may determine the gender. Statsrådet får utfärda närmare bestämmelser om hur vissa screeningar ska ordnas. This provision says how paternity or maternity is determined by the gender recorded in the population data system at the relevant time. Myndigheten för digitalisering och befolkningsdata may change the designation of a person’s parenthood on application, to match the person’s determined sex; the person may apply when applying for sex determination or after it has been determined.
