Statute overview

About this statute

These regulations set fire-safety equipment and firefighting arrangements for certain ships, especially Class I passenger ships and some smaller Class II(A) ships. These ship regulations require specified Class VII ships and tankers to carry fire safety equipment, detection systems, foam systems, shore connections, and, for certain tankers, inert gas systems. This provision sets fire-safety and inert-gas equipment requirements for ships, including fire pumps, deck foam systems, fire appliances, and related controls, alarms, and arrangements. The Director may approve equivalent ship fittings or provisions and may grant, alter, or cancel exemptions. Contravention of specified regulations by the ship’s owner and master is an offence punishable by a level 4 fine and 2 years’ imprisonment. Automatic fire alarm and fire detection systems must meet Schedule 12 requirements, stay ready at all times, self-monitor, support periodic testing, and be used only for fire detection.
